Wavve's birth — Korea's local streaming counter-attack
Wavve launched 2019-09 as Korea's local counter-attack against Netflix. Predecessor was the merger of SK Telecom's oksusu (launched 2016) + KBS/MBC/SBS three networks' POOQ (launched 2012). SK Telecom provided capital + tech, the three networks contributed content (KBS Descendants of the Sun, Lovers in Paris; MBC Dae Jang Geum, My Name Is Kim Sam-soon; SBS My Love from the Star, Come Back, Mister). Three networks merging into one SVOD is rare globally — a special arrangement Korea made to counter Netflix. Problem: 4 shareholders had divergent goals — SK wanted platform-thinking, networks wanted to preserve traditional TV ad revenue. 2025-06-10 Tving-Wavve merger approval
Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) approved the Tving-Wavve merger 2025-06-10. Tving is led by CJ ENM (Korean entertainment group with tvN/Mnet/partial JTBC stakes), user base ~5.2M. Wavve ~4.3M. Merged ~9.5M users, directly challenging Netflix Korea ~6M and Coupang Play ~7M. Key approval conditions: (1) cannot raise prices more than 10%/year; (2) must keep KBS/MBC public broadcaster content freely available; (3) completion deadline 2026-12-31. Post-approval, new Wavve subscriptions frozen from 2025-Q3 (existing users continue renewing), full merger expected 2026-Q4. Meaning: anyone trying to newly subscribe to Wavve is effectively signing up for a 'soon-to-disappear-but-content-migrates' service.
SBS's exit — the 2025-09-30 turning point
Among Wavve's three network shareholders, SBS signed an exclusive co-production deal with Netflix 2024-12, formally exited Wavve 2025-09-30, all SBS content (current airing + historical catalog) simultaneously delisted from Wavve and migrated to Netflix Korea + Netflix Global. This was Wavve's biggest content loss in history: (1) Current dramas — SBS's flagship Vagabond, Taxi Driver series lost; (2) Historical catalog — My Love from the Star, Dear My Friends and other classics disappeared from Wavve, must seek on Netflix. SBS's exit accelerated the Wavve-Tving merger — without SBS content, Wavve solo couldn't compete with Tving. Korea-only strict geofence — overseas users' unblock path
Wavve's REGION_CODES is strictly Korea, overseas IPs all get 'Service available only in Korea'. VPN strictness 3-star means: (1) datacenter IPs likely blocked (Wavve uses an ASN blacklist similar to Netflix); (2) quality_vpn (residential IP pool) nodes pass; (3) Smart DNS partially passes (depends on whether the DNS provider stays current). Standard subscription path for overseas Koreans / students: (1) Korean VPN node — Surfshark/Express have Seoul, residential IP pack recommended; (2) Korean phone number (+82) — required for sign-up; (3) Korean credit card or Naver Pay — required for payment; (4) Korean Resident Registration Number (jumin number) — required for some plans. Among these, the toughest for overseas users are the ID number and phone, often solved via SMSactivate + Korean credit card black market accounts. This bar is higher than Watcha, so overseas users rarely pick Wavve — most choose TVING or Coupang Play (more overseas-friendly).
Post-merger future — what the new platform looks like
After full 2026-Q4 merger, new platform basics: (1) User base ~9.5M, Korea's largest; (2) Content fusion — Tving brings tvN (My Liberation Notes, Twenty-Five, Twenty-One), JTBC (Doctor Cha), Mnet (idol audition shows); Wavve brings KBS + MBC public broadcaster shows + variety; (3) Brand name TBD — industry rumors say possibly 'Tving Wavve' or a new brand (Korean companies often pick fresh names for mergers, e.g. Hanwha Ocean = Daewoo Shipbuilding + Hanwha); (4) Pricing strategy — bound by KFTC's price-rise cap, expected to stay ₩7,900-13,500/month range; (5) Netflix Korea's position unchanged — since Netflix doesn't move, post-merger we'll have 'Wavve+Tving merged vs Netflix Korea' bipolar (with Coupang Play making it three-way).
