US-only value — CBS sports + Star Trek
Paramount+ US's value pillars: (1) CBS same-day streaming — NCIS, Survivor, Dancing with the Stars air on CBS broadcast TV next-day or same-day streaming, which no other service has; (2) NFL Sunday games — synced to CBS's broadcast package, a hard requirement for fans; (3) UFC events — the 2025 rights deal pulled UFC Numbered PPVs into Paramount+ (previously ESPN+ exclusive); (4) The full Star Trek canon — Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Starfleet Academy — mandatory for Trek fans. Originals include Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone-verse (1923, 1883).
VPN detection — slightly looser than Hulu
Paramount+'s anti-VPN layers: (1) IP reputation (in-house + third-party vendors) — datacenter IPs are almost all blocked, surfacing as 'Access denied'; (2) account address validation — US accounts need US address + US card; (3) GPS verification for NFL / UFC live events — Live TV tiers only, to keep viewership inside US borders. AF3 rates Paramount+ at 3-star, looser than Hulu's 4-star but stricter than Netflix. In 2024 Paramount stepped up blocking of mainstream VPNs — most EVP and NordVPN US exits are blacklisted; niche VPNs + residential IPs are more reliable.
AF3 node recommendations
AF3's Paramount+ US only accepts REGION_CODES = [US, PR, GU, VI, MP, AS]. Recommended: (1) US-East residential IPs (Virginia, NY, CT — Paramount's CDN strongholds); (2) avoid California (high IP reuse); (3) on NFL game days, avoid Asia-Pacific exits — timezone stacking causes buffering. Residential IP is near-mandatory — datacenter IPs are mostly blocked. Pricing: Essential (ad-supported, $7.99/mo), Premium with SHOWTIME (ad-free + SHOWTIME content, $12.99/mo), Premium + Live TV (above + local CBS live, $19.99/mo — US addresses only).
The SHOWTIME merger and catalog shift
In 2023 Paramount shut down the standalone SHOWTIME streaming service (showtime.com) and folded everything into Paramount+ Premium. That merger boosted Paramount+ Premium dramatically — adding heavy-hitter SHOWTIME series (Beef, Yellowjackets, Dexter, Shameless, Billions, Queer as Folk) and SHOWTIME boxing events. Post-merger Premium is $12.99/mo; the $10.99/mo standalone SHOWTIME has been discontinued. For SHOWTIME-only users this was a price hike; for Paramount+ users it's a free upgrade. In 2025 Paramount completed a merger with Skydance (FCC-approved in July), potentially enabling Apple TV+ / Paramount+ cross-platform content sharing in the long run.
International (Paramount+ Intl) vs US
Paramount+ International covers 25 countries (UK, AU, Canada, FR, DE, IT, JP, KR, India, Southern / Northern Europe, MX, BR, AR, etc.), with a much thinner catalog than US — typically Paramount Originals only (the Star Trek canon, parts of Rick & Morty, 1923) plus some locally-licensed content. No CBS current-season shows (those rights are locked to the US market), no NFL / UFC (international sports rights go to DAZN / ESPN locally). It's a separate product with no account sharing across the US — accessing US content requires a VPN plus a US account. AF3 tracks it as a separate slug (paramountplusintl).
Devices and quality — NFL 4K requirements
Paramount+ US device support: iOS / Android / Apple TV / Fire TV / Roku / Android TV / Samsung / LG / Xbox / PS4-5. 4K HDR is only on select originals and NFL live — new-season Star Trek, 1923, and Yellowstone all ship 4K HDR10 / Dolby Vision + Atmos. NFL Sunday 4K requires: (1) Premium + Live TV tier; (2) 25Mbps+ bandwidth; (3) HDR10-capable TV + Apple TV 4K, Nvidia Shield, or a high-end Samsung QLED. Browser 4K needs Edge / Safari; Chrome caps at 1080p. Old Roku devices (pre-2019) often can't play Paramount+ — upgrade to Ultra or Streaming Stick 4K.
