myTV SUPER vs. TVB Anywhere — the fundamental split
Many overseas Chinese confuse the two products. myTV SUPER is TVB's streaming for 'local viewers living in Hong Kong' — it's like an HK Netflix+cable hybrid: LIVE broadcast + on-demand + universal TV set-top-box (my Super box), requiring HK IP and HK payment. TVB Anywhere is the overseas-Chinese subbrand covering US / CA / AU / NZ / SE Asia, with an entirely different catalog (overseas lacks some new TVB dramas but adds US/European films and third-party channels), region-variable pricing ($9.99 - $19.99), and allows overseas payment. Accounts don't interop. AF3 runs myTV SUPER on HK-only REGION_CODES; Anywhere is a separate platform with its own probe logic. If you're overseas and want new TVB dramas, TVB Anywhere is the official path. If you want myTV SUPER's classic-HK-drama catalog and LIVE, you need HK VPN + HK payment.
HK nodes — scarce and polarized
HK VPN nodes aren't scarce in commercial VPN lineups (ExpressVPN / NordVPN / Surfshark all carry them), but myTV SUPER is sensitive to both IP type and geography. Most commercial VPN HK nodes are datacenter IPs (Tencent Cloud / Alibaba Cloud HK / Equinix), and while the main site loads, LIVE streams and new-drama VOD frequently trigger regional checks. AF3 recommends: (1) HK ISP residential IP (HKBN / PCCW / HKT broadband), sold by dedicated residential-VPN providers at 5-10× the datacenter price; (2) branded commercial VPN HK nodes as second choice, ~70% first-play success; (3) avoid cheap self-hosted HK VPS — highest trigger rate. IP scoring: residential 30 / quality_vpn 25 / normal_vpn 20 / datacenter 15. 4K needs 25 Mbps+; most HK nodes deliver, but cross-sea latency should stay ≤100ms for stable buffering.
The payment hurdle — harder than the IP
myTV SUPER's payment rules are stricter than IP checks: only HK-issued credit cards (Visa / Master), PPS (Payment by Phone Service), bank transfer, or 7-Eleven payment slip. Overseas Visa / Master cards are rejected even under HK IP — the BIN (first 6 digits) reveals issuing region. Workarounds: (1) virtual card providers (Wise / Revolut) occasionally have HK-compatible BINs, but hit-rate is unreliable; (2) proxy-payment platforms (Taobao / HK-region agents) — popular with China users, one-off subscriptions; (3) HK friend paying with HK card (simplest and most robust); (4) Apple ID HK + in-app subscription (but Apple ID HK funding loops back to HK cards — circular). In practice, most overseas users settle on 'friend pays + HK VPN login' — there's no shortcut.
AF3 probe structure — 4 layers + red region banner
AF3 probes myTV SUPER across 4 layers: (1) Primary (mytvsuper.com) — homepage HTML + regional headers; (2) Player (video.mytvsuper.com) — Dash / HLS fragment retrieval; (3) Auth (api.mytvsuper.com/auth) — login and token refresh; (4) Content discovery (api.mytvsuper.com/catalog) — program listings. LIVE has its own live.mytvsuper.com domain, which AF3 also probes. Typical failures: non-HK IP → homepage redirects to a red-background 'This service is HK-only' banner → AF3 rules ❌ blocked. HK IP + datacenter flag → homepage passes but LIVE throws 'Cannot play at this location' → AF3 rules ⚠️ partial (main OK, playback blocked). Probe timeout is 5s (shorter than Netflix's 8s) — myTV SUPER is unusually latency-sensitive.
Content highlights — HK dramas, variety, sports, LIVE
myTV SUPER's core value: (1) TVB new-drama premieres (Wife Interrupted, A Dance of Queens, Line Walker 3), typically 1-2 weeks ahead of TVB Anywhere; (2) classic HK drama vault (1983 Return of the Condor Heroes, 1992 The Greed of Man, 2007 Heart of Greed) — exclusives even Max / Netflix lack; (3) HK variety (The Fun Club, Millionaire reboot) in original Cantonese; (4) HK Premier League / sports LIVE channels; (5) TVB News LIVE. For overseas Chinese, the draw is 'original Cantonese + exclusive TVB window' — TVB Anywhere overseas trims HK / Macau social news and some sports LIVE (rights reasons). Typical myTV SUPER VPN users are HK-diaspora professionals + overseas Cantonese-speaking households.
Devices and the real-world setup
myTV SUPER device coverage: desktop web (Chrome / Safari / Edge), iOS / Android apps (HK App Store / Google Play required), set-top-boxes (my Super box, some HK-region Android TV boxes like Xiaomi HK), smart TVs (Samsung / LG HK firmware). Most stable overseas setups: (1) router-level HK VPN + desktop browser (best 4K stability); (2) iPad (HK Apple ID) + HK VPN app + LIVE via the app; (3) Apple TV + HK VPN (router-level), app installed via HK Apple TV App Store. Never use free VPN — myTV SUPER is IP-quality-sensitive and free VPN first-play success is under 20%. DNS must tunnel — a DNS leak gets the player layer to reject outright. SmartDNS (VPN-less alternative) has been largely killed since 2023 by TVB's network team — not recommended.
