167-country coverage and the China exception
Apple Music operates in 167 countries — roughly wherever the Apple Store exists. Two major differences from Spotify: (1) Apple Music is fully live in mainland China with a Chinese catalog, CNY billing, and CN Apple IDs — Spotify is 'gray zone' in CN (web loads but app login stalls on reCAPTCHA). (2) Apple Music hasn't formally pulled out of Russia (only paused new subscriptions in 2022); Spotify fully withdrew. Hard-blocked regions: North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Syria, Sudan. AF3 flags CN specifically — it works, but the catalog gap with international regions is huge (many Western albums missing, different Chinese mainland licensing). A common Chinese-user setup: international Apple ID + cross-region subscription to unlock the global catalog while keeping Apple's ecosystem intact.
Apple ID region is the master variable
Apple Music isn't like Spotify where accounts can cross regions freely — it's locked to the Apple ID's region field. Apple ID region determines: (1) Apple Music catalog (Taylor Swift full discography on US, Bollywood on IN); (2) subscription price (India ₹99 / Turkey ₺40 / US $10.99); (3) billing currency and payment methods (India needs UPI / local cards, US needs US cards); (4) App Store availability. Prerequisites for changing Apple ID region: (1) $0 balance (cancel subscriptions first); (2) no active subscriptions. After change, iCloud data is preserved, but region-exclusive apps disappear. Best cross-region Apple Music path: create a new Apple ID in the target region (India / Turkey / US), subscribe using local payment, then share the membership via Family Sharing to your primary Apple ID's devices.
Lossless + Atmos bundled — why this is the killer feature
In June 2021, Apple Music bundled Lossless (up to 24-bit/192kHz ALAC) and Dolby Atmos (spatial audio) into the base subscription at no extra cost. Competitors: Spotify only launched Music Pro in October 2024, charging $9.99 extra for Lossless; TIDAL Hi-Fi Plus is $19.99/month (with MQA); Qobuz Studio Premier is $14.99 (Hi-Res). Apple Music made 'all-inclusive audio quality at $10.99' the industry benchmark. Caveats: (1) Bluetooth headphones can't transmit Lossless (bandwidth limit) — you need USB-C wired or AirPlay 2; (2) AirPods / Pro / Max support Atmos but not Lossless (spatialized AAC); (3) Hi-Res playback requires an external USB DAC or Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter. Spatial audio helps pop modestly, but really shines on film scores, classical, and live recordings.
Cross-region pricing — the real India ₹99 experience
Apple Music Individual plan pricing (cross-region): US $10.99, UK £10.99, Japan ¥1080 / $7, Turkey ₺70 / $2.3, India ₹99 / $1.2, Philippines ₱159 / $2.8, Vietnam ₫65000 / $2.6. India ₹99 is the cheapest legal channel worldwide, beating even Spotify India's ₹119. Real cross-region process: (1) buy an India iTunes gift card ($10 covers a year of Apple Music) — available on SEAGM / MTCGame-style gray-market gift card shops; (2) create an Indian Apple ID (Apple accepts +91 virtual numbers, SMS-Activate can receive); (3) redeem the gift card, subscribe to Apple Music Individual for ₹99; (4) use Family Sharing on your main device to share the membership to everyday devices. Note: Apple Family Sharing is capped at 6 members + organizer; Apple occasionally but not aggressively validates family address.
AF3 probe structure — 3-star strict 4-layer coverage
AF3's Apple Music probes cover 4 layers: (1) Primary (music.apple.com — HTML with storefront ID); (2) API endpoint (amp-api.music.apple.com — playback / playlist / album core); (3) Account service (gsa.apple.com / idmsa.apple.com — Apple ID auth); (4) CDN (assets.mzstatic.com — artwork, previews). All four must pass. The Apple ID auth layer adds complexity Spotify / Amazon Music don't have — it requires 2FA push to your trusted device. AF3 rates 3-star VPN strict; IP scoring: residential 30 / quality_vpn 28 / normal_vpn 25 / datacenter 20 — same numbers as Spotify. A common VPN trap: if iCloud Private Relay is on, it forms a double tunnel with your VPN — Apple Music API often trips up on this, so disable Private Relay when using a VPN.
Device ecosystem and HomePod gold pairing
Within Apple's ecosystem, Apple Music is unbeatable: iPhone / iPad / Mac / Apple Watch / Apple TV / HomePod / CarPlay / Vision Pro all natively supported, seamless handoff. HomePod / mini supports Siri voice request ('Hey Siri, play Beatles'); Atmos via paired HomePods is genuinely impressive. CarPlay supports offline playlist downloads. Apple Watch plays independently over cellular — leave your phone at home while running. Outside Apple the experience drops: Android app lacks some features (no Shazam integration, limited Atmos devices); Windows app only got stable in 2024; Tesla dashboards include Apple Music natively; Sonos supports it but the experience is below HomePod. Chinese-user combo: CN iPhone + cross-region Apple ID (India region) + HomePod mini (works on CN version, but Siri's Chinese-language international-playlist recognition is weak).
