What streaming works in Malaysia — 2026 availability list
Updated 2026-04-24
TL;DR
Malaysia is one of SEA's most affordable markets. Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar (the MY variant, same SEA Hotstar system as SG), Prime Video, Apple TV+ all work. Local distinctives: Astro Go (companion to Astro satellite TV), iflix (acquired by Tencent — some content merged into WeTV), Viu (Asian dramas), meWATCH. Malay / Chinese / Tamil dubbing demand is high; platforms localize heavily. What's missing: US-only Hulu, Peacock, ESPN+. Spotify and Apple Music are cheap.

Tips
When VPNing into Malaysia, prefer Kuala Lumpur nodes on Malaysian ISPs (TM Unifi, Maxis, Celcom, Digi) residential ranges. MY pricing is on the lower end of Asia: Netflix Mobile RM 17 (about US$3.6), Disney+ Hotstar yearly RM 159 (about US$34) — excellent value, but signup requires a Malaysian credit card or Touch n Go e-wallet. Hotstar MY accounts are NOT interchangeable with the Indian version; cross-region switching can freeze the account. AI tools and social platforms work without restriction, though MCMC (Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission) DNS-blocks some politically sensitive sites — switching to 1.1.1.1 or Google DNS bypasses these.
